  • Technical Professional Development: We have used the Technology Survey and others to plan what would be the best training for teachers and staff.
    1. Software Training
      1. Plato is a good example of how staff research and evaluate new acquisitions to make sure they are current, are adult student based, will accommodate different learning styles and will service the broadest number of departments and students. Teachers spent their personal time to go to different school sites to evaluate Plato software and competitors before settling on the package. At the many PLATO in services that followed the install, teachers have been able to augment their lesson plans with the new software and its flexible structure.
      2. CCC and EDL academic packages have had over the years over a dozens staff and teacher trainings on how to fit the software to their students needs.
    2. Application and Presentation Training: The office staff at OAC and IAC campuses was trained on how to navigate our web site and use all the features. In addition, they're trained to use various Microsoft Office applications as Excel, Word, etc.
    3. ESL Staff Development: ESL and ESL/Cit. staff who would like to bring a laptop computer, multimedia projector, document camera, digital camera or the camcorder into their classroom will receive appropriate training in order to confidently borrow this equipment. The ESL program maintains a calendar of workshops to train teachers in the use of technology equipment and applications (e.g. using the various devices cites above as well as software such as MS PowerPoint, iMovie, or ExamView. These workshops are repeated at intervals to attempt to make participation as convenient as possible. ESL teaching staff will be provided with paid training opportunities to improve their technology skills and to develop curriculum that integrates technology into our existing ESL curriculum. As more equipment becomes assigned permanently to ESL classrooms (e.g. document cameras & video projectors), there will be larger scale workshops which will be held during normal hours of duty to maximize attendance.
    4. In 2001 East Side Adult Education partnered with San Jose State University to offer a program of graduate units which would fulfill technology requirements for specific teaching credentials.
    5. Technical Staff Training: Procedures are written and staff are trained to fix equipment, learn the software short-comings and work-arounds and how to handle the different academic software databases.
