ACCOUNTING 1A
This course prepares you for Accounting 1B and eventual entry-level employment and college-level accounting.  Course topics include basic accounting principles with an emphasis on terminology and forms, journals, ledgers, financial statements, end-of-fiscal-year functions, banking, journalizing sales, purchases, cash payments and receipts.  5 units of  math or elective credit may be earned.

ACCOUNTING 1B
This course prepares you for Accounting 2A and eventual entry-level employment and college-level accounting by instructing you in the proper procedures for maintaining the financial records of a corporate merchandising business.  Course topics include transactions dealing with:  payroll, purchases and sales discounts, uncollectible accounts, bad debts expense, depreciation of plant assets and other plant asset accounting, notes and interest, accrued revenue and expenses, dividends declaration and payment, journalizing end-of-fiscal-year adjustments and closing entries, worksheet preparation and analysis, and financial statement preparation and analysis.   Prerequisite:  Accounting 1A.    5 units of math or elective credit may be earned.

NOTE:  Completion of Accounting 1A and 1B with a grade of “B” or better allows a student to receive 3 semester units of college credit at San Jose City/Evergreen Valley College.


COMPUTER OPERATOR CLASSES
 
SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS/Desktop Publishing
The Computer Operator/Desktop Publishing class is a one-semester course, which offers students an opportunity to acquire word processing and preliminary multi-media skills.   These skills will include working with photos, painting, and editing, photo retouching and creating special effects.  Upon the completion of this class, the student will be familiar with the capabilities and functions of Microsoft Office.   Students will be exposed to Adobe Photoshop and imovie.  Vocabulary and terminology surrounding multi-media exercises will be presented.  Students will learn how to develop presentations, operate scanners and import pictures from digital cameras and adjust their images.  A semester of typing is a recommended prerequisite.

SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS/EXCEL
This one-semester course  is open to any student with an interest in developing their skills regarding spreadsheets.  You will learn to create spreadsheets and graphs.  As you progress through the course, you will become knowledgeable regarding the program functions such as copy, move, AutoSum, and simple formula development.  You will be able to print, save and backup your work.  Other areas studied during the semester are making charts and graphs automatically with the ChartWizard, using databases, multiple worksheets, macros, and templates.

COMPUTER LITERACY
This course provides you with the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of word processing, database, and spreadsheet functions.  You will be able to define commonly used vocabulary terms associated with the use of computers.  You will demonstrate the ability to operate the computer as a research tool such as using the Internet and Email applications.    A semester of typing is a recommended prerequisite.

This course is designed to  prepare you for immediate employment in clerical occupations.  Course content includes filing, telephone techniques, business correspondence, as well as career exploration, interviewing, and job applications.  You  will benefit by taking Keyboarding and/or Word Processing in conjunction with Office Procedures.

TYPIST CLASSES

KEYBOARDING, ALL LEVELS
This class offers you the opportunity to develop the basic skills needed to interact with computers on two levels.  1A level exercises teach beginning students the touch method of keyboarding and will allow them to achieve a level of 20-30 gross words per minute.  More advanced students who wish to “brush-up” and/or improve keyboarding skills will be placed in 1B exercises and should achieve a level of approximately 35-40 gross words per minute.  Successful completion of either level satisfies the prerequisite for Word Processing.

KEYBOARDING/WORD PROCESSING
This one semester course is to help students develop the basic skills needed to interact with computers.  This course my be repeated once for credit.  Using proper  techniques,  students will learn the touch method of keyboarding, and should achieve a level of 20-30 gross words per minute,  Advanced students typing 45 gross words per minute or more have the option to begin learning a word processing program.  Completion of this class satisfies the prerequisits for Word Processing.

MEDICAL RECORD TECHNICIAN
This one semester course is designed to prepare students for a role in the field of a medical front office assistant.  The class will provide students with skills in telephone techniques, filing, communication, customer support, keyboarding and other computer software skills.  Participants will learn billing and collections systems, medical record procedures, interpersonal skills, and the importance of confidentiality policies.  A semester of typing is a recommended prerequisite.

*Typing tests are administered for city and county applicants.  The fee is $15.00, payable by cash or money order only.  Test is given on the first through fourth Wednesday of each month at 5:15 PM.  Holidays may affect this schedule.  Call 928-9300 for special monthly testing schedule.
